MPC begins three-day meeting; policy due 7 October

5 October 2026 | Reserve Bank of India, via Rediff (PTI)

The RBI's Monetary Policy Committee began a three-day meeting on Monday, 5 October 2026. The RBI said the monetary policy statement will be announced on 7 October at 10 am. The policy repo rate stands at 5.25 per cent.

A PTI poll of 16 economists and bankers found most expecting a 25 basis point hike, driven by inflation risks from the West Asia conflict, though views are divided and some expect a pause. Retail inflation rose to an eight-month high of 4.82 per cent in August. The last repo hike was in February 2023, to 6.50 per cent. These are expectations, not a decision.

Key facts
  • MPC meeting: three days from 5 October 2026
  • Statement: 7 October at 10 am
  • Policy repo rate: 5.25%
  • Last hike: February 2023, to 6.50%

Exam takeaway: Polls are expectations: use the rate decision itself for facts, not the forecast.

Quick revision: MPC from 5 Oct; announcement 7 Oct; repo 5.25%; last hike Feb 2023.

RBI extends curbs on three co-operative banks

5 October 2026 | Reserve Bank of India, via ZeeBiz

The RBI extended restrictions on three co-operative banks for three months: Samarth Sahakari Bank Ltd, Solapur, until 7 January 2027; The Baghat Urban Co-operative Bank Ltd, Solan, and Ramgarhia Co-operative Bank Ltd, New Delhi, both until 8 January 2027. The RBI said the extension is in the interest of depositors and should not be read as an improvement in the banks' financial position.

Withdrawal limits continue. Deposits up to Rs 5 lakh per depositor are covered by DICGC, subject to rules. The RBI will review the position again after the extended period.

Key facts
  • Banks: Samarth Sahakari (Solapur), Baghat Urban (Solan), Ramgarhia (New Delhi)
  • Extended to: 7 January 2027 and 8 January 2027
  • Deposit insurance: up to Rs 5 lakh per depositor (DICGC)
  • Extension is not a sign of improved finances

Exam takeaway: Know the three bank names, their cities and the Rs 5 lakh DICGC cover.

RBI proposes Expected Credit Loss provisioning for banks

5 October 2026 | Reserve Bank of India proposal, via ETGovernment

The RBI has proposed moving banks from the current incurred-loss provisioning framework to a forward-looking Expected Credit Loss (ECL) framework, reported ETGovernment on 5 October 2026. Under the present approach, provisioning is largely linked to identified deterioration or classification as stressed or non-performing. Under ECL, banks estimate potential credit losses earlier, based on the probability of default and likely loss.

Exposures are classified into three stages by change in credit risk. Stage 1 covers accounts with no significant increase in credit risk since origination, with losses recognised for possible defaults over the next 12 months. Stage 2 covers accounts with a significant increase in credit risk even if they are still servicing and are not NPAs, with losses recognised over the remaining life of the exposure.

Key facts
  • Change: incurred-loss to Expected Credit Loss
  • Stages: three, by change in credit risk
  • Stage 1: 12-month expected loss
  • Stage 2: lifetime expected loss, not yet NPA

Exam takeaway: This is a proposal. ECL recognises losses earlier than the incurred-loss approach.

Quick revision: RBI proposes ECL: 3 stages; Stage 1 = 12 months; Stage 2 = lifetime.

The campaign line is 'Samajh Se Investing Simple', and he said investor education is market infrastructure.
