SEBI tightens 'fit and proper' norms for intermediaries

17 April 2026 | The Tribune (Tribune News Service)

The Tribune reported on 17 April 2026 that SEBI had notified amendments to the regulations governing market intermediaries such as stockbrokers, depository participants, investment advisers and portfolio managers. The changes were published in the Gazette of India and came into force immediately, aimed at strengthening investor protection.

One change defines 'days' in the intermediary regulations as calendar days unless a regulation states otherwise. Another changes the 'fit and proper' disqualification wording from whether a person has 'incurred' disqualifications to whether the person has been 'subjected to' certain disqualifying events, and removes two items from the relevant schedule.

Key facts
  • Regulator: SEBI
  • Applies to: intermediaries such as brokers, DPs, advisers, portfolio managers
  • 'Days' now means calendar days unless stated otherwise
  • Effective: immediately on Gazette publication

Exam takeaway: 'Fit and proper' criteria test an entity's integrity, financial soundness and legal compliance for SEBI registration.

Quick revision: SEBI amends intermediary regulations: 'days' = calendar days; fit-and-proper wording tightened; effective immediately.
