Today's Scheme

Atal Pension Yojana (APY)

Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance

APY is a voluntary pension scheme for workers in the unorganised sector. It provides a defined pension that depends on the contribution and its period.

Subscribers receive a fixed minimum pension of Rs 1,000, Rs 2,000, Rs 3,000, Rs 4,000 or Rs 5,000 per month at the age of 60, depending on their contributions, which are based on the age of joining. The minimum age of joining is 18 years and the maximum is 40 years, so contributions run for at least 20 years.

A citizen of India aged 18 to 40 with a savings bank or post office savings account can join. From 1 October 2022, however, any citizen who is or has been an income-tax payer is not eligible to open a new APY account (Department of Financial Services notification of 10 August 2022, as stated by PFRDA). Contributions are made monthly, quarterly or half-yearly through auto-debit, and a nominee is mandatory. A subscriber can have only one APY account.

The Central Government guarantees the minimum pension: if the corpus earns less than estimated, the Government funds the shortfall, and if returns are higher, subscribers get enhanced benefits. Late contributions attract overdue interest of Rs 1 per month for every Rs 100 or part thereof.

Key facts
  • Type: voluntary pension scheme for the unorganised sector
  • Pension: Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 per month from age 60
  • Eligibility: ages 18 to 40; savings bank or post office account; not open to income-tax payers from 1 Oct 2022
  • Minimum pension guaranteed by the Central Government

Exam takeaway: APY pays a guaranteed Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 monthly pension from age 60 (join at 18 to 40; income-tax payers cannot join from 1 Oct 2022); PMJJBY and PMSBY are the insurance schemes.
