RBI keeps FPI debt limits unchanged for FY27, raises absolute ceilings

6 April 2026 | Reserve Bank of India decision, as reported by CNBC-TV18

CNBC-TV18 reported on 6 April 2026 that the Reserve Bank of India kept the limits for foreign portfolio investor (FPI) investment in debt unchanged for FY 2026-27, while raising the overall investment ceiling and restructuring the framework to improve participation.

Limits remain at 6 per cent for government securities (G-Secs), 2 per cent for State Development Loans (SDLs) and 15 per cent for corporate bonds. The absolute FPI debt ceiling rises to Rs 15.52 lakh crore for April to September 2026 and Rs 16.33 lakh crore for October 2026 to March 2027.

The report said the RBI removed the long-term sub-categories for incremental G-Sec limits and gave the entire increase in SDL limits to the general category. Citing SBI Research, it said utilisation under the non-Fully Accessible Route stood at about 18 per cent as of March 2026.

Key facts
  • Limits unchanged: 6% G-Secs, 2% SDLs, 15% corporate bonds
  • Absolute ceiling: Rs 15.52 lakh crore (Apr-Sep 2026)
  • Absolute ceiling: Rs 16.33 lakh crore (Oct 2026-Mar 2027)
  • Non-FAR utilisation: about 18% in March 2026, per SBI Research

Exam takeaway: The Fully Accessible Route lets FPIs buy specified government securities without investment limits.
